Sorry hun. There is no prize.

Are you someone who loves the feeling of checking something off their to do list? Do you feel accomplished when a task is done?

I know I do. I am truly driven by getting things done. The more I complete the more I feel accomplished.

Or do I?

Do I truly feel successful? Accomplished? Like progress was made?

Do I? Do I really feel that way when there is a list still waiting for me? When there is a sink full of dishes waiting for me? And the floor needs swept and a client needs that thing in the morning yet?

Gosh does the to do list ever end? Can I really feel accompliahed if it is never done? Can I relax fully if it is never done and just always hanging over my head?

No? No.

Not even close.

Isn’t there a prize for the person who has the most on their plate? Or someone who finishes a ton of tasks? There is no prize for an empty sink. There is no prize for always putting your client needs before yours. There is no prize for staying up until 1 a.m. to clean your house or check just one more thing off your to do list.

Shocker I know. Trust me I had the same feelings late one night when I came to the same conclusion. It was a punch in the gut for sure.

I had always measured my success, my awesomeness by how much I could get done on my to do list. And now? Now what benchmarks would I use to feel successful? Accomplished?

Well if you find the answer let me know becuase as of now I am still soul searching to figure it out. So for now, just know you are not alone.
