What’s a work life balance?

Ever feel like there are some people who just have their life all together? They can balance the priorities of life from family to work to volunteer activities with ease. You tend to ask them “How do you do it all?”

Well I’m here to let you in on a secret – none of us have all our ducks in a row. Honestly we are just thankful to gather what ducks we do have and get them going in the right direction. Truth!

A work life balance doesn’t exist, especially in agriculture. As a farm mom you are juggling multiple balls. From the farm to bookwork to kids and housework and your job and meals. It’s honestly insane how much we truly balance.

As you look at your never ending to do list and what you need to balance, its up to you to figure out which ones are glass and which ones are rubber. Let me explain. It’s a concept that I’ve had to master and am still mastering myself. There are your priorities or balls that are glass and as you are juggling them all like family, kids, etc. You can not drop those.

But then there are other things that if you just can’t catch the ball while juggling it will be OK to drop because it’s made of rubber and will bounce. These could be your volunteer items, sometimes work projects, extended family obligations, etc. I promise if these balls drop its OK. And that has been the hardest thing for me to wrap my brain around as a person who wants to do it all and be there for everyone.

We are all a work in progress so I challenge you to determine which of your priorities are glass and which ones are okay to bounce every now and then. I’m right there with you- still learning and growing.

I’m Amber

Welcome to Caring for Calves and Kids. I’m a 5th generation dairy farmer farming with my parents and husband while trying to raise 3 kids. Life is crazy, messy and so much fun! It’s hard to be a mom and sometimes even harder when you farm. So to ensure no one else feels alone I’m sharing my stories. Enjoy!
