There was something that happened to me after my first baby was born. I was shattered into a million pieces instantly taking on a new identity of mom. It was a lot and months later I came to find out I had postpartum depression.
I would think, “I just want my baby to go back to the hospital so I can go back to normal.”
“I feel like I’m watching my life go by in an out of body experience.”
“Gosh, I don’t know what’s wrong with me. This is supposed to be a happy time for me, but I feel the opposite.”
It was a very dark time. Nights were getting longer. Days shorter.
Reflecting on that time I’ve come up with a few phrases to say to a mom with postpartum depression.
– I’m here for you.
– I understand.
– It will take time and it will be ok.
– The feelings you’re feeling are valid.
– I wish I could give you some advice and make it go away, but anything I tell you won’t help. Your mind won’t let it.
Some of the thoughts that this new mom expresses might sound terrible. They might not even make sense, but the biggest thing you need to remember as a you sit with this person is to ensure they know you’re not going anywhere and that these thoughts are normal for new moms.
