Caring for Calves and Kids

I am a person of schedules, stability, consistency – definitely not change. It’s the part of life that makes my anxiety go crazy, my nerves get all wonky and me stressed out. However, over the years I’ve found that change is truly the only thing we can count on to be consistent. Nothing stays the same forever.

            This really hit me recently when I attended a Dixie Chicks or The Chicks concert at the state fair. My girlfriends and I drove 3 hours to go see them. It was like 95 degrees with a ton of humidity and no wind. We were so excited to be reliving our middle school and high school days listening to their music. It has so many memories attached to the songs – Goodbye Earl, Cowboy Take Me Away, Wide Open Spaces and so many more.

            So here we are sitting, waiting for the concert to start assuming it was going to be like memory lane. Except that’s not what happened. The Dixie Chicks were no longer the Dixie Chicks. They had truly accepted their new role as The Chicks. Playing just a few oldies and mostly songs from their new album, it made me realize that nothing is going to be able to replicate the first time I head Wide Open Spaces as a teenager. The way it made me feel.

            Change. It’s that one constant in life we can always count on, even if we wish to relive memory lane. Many of our ideas, thoughts and feelings we had have been changed, clouded or adjusted based on new life experiences between now and then. It could be for the better or it could be the opposite.

            It’s why I’m challenging myself to write down and hang on to those memories, but to also take in what’s happening around me now with three young kids. Because I know that my perspective will change as time changes and the feelings and thoughts I have related to this moment won’t always be the same. They will somehow be different when I look back on them – changed.

            We only get one life to live so I challenge you to make it a good one and if you’re like me and hate change – well I’d advise you probably start embracing since it truly is the only constant in life 😊
