A Letter to My Only Son

A Letter to My Only Son

To my only son.

The day you came into this world my heart grew in the amount of love it can hold. You were 9 pounds of adorableness with a squishy face. You loved to cuddle me nice and close. Crying, I would come running to your side to give you anything you need and that’s all you needed – your mom.

As you grew older you learned to love the days on the farm with your day. The days in the tractors and spent with cows started to become your favorite. Nights is when you needed me, your mom. You would cry in the wee hours of the night and I would sleepily walk down the hall to your room, crawl under a blanket and sleep next to you. You would throw your arm around me to cuddle and I would soak it up knowing these wouldn’t last long. You needed your momma.

You continued to grow taller, wiser and more independent. You spent days with your dad working cattle and making hay. That took up even more of your time and there was less time for mom. When you needed to travel to a sport or 4-H meeting or needed some advice I was still your go to. While it was less than I was used to, I would soak up any moment I could take because I knew that’s when you needed your momma.

Then came the day you entered high school. Man, oh man was I scared. I knew you were needing mom less and less, but I was still in a spot in your heart. You would still turn to me for advice or a listening ear. And in those moments my heart would warm knowing you needed your momma.

As you start your own family and become independent, please know you can always reach out to your momma. I will always be here. Please keep your love for the world, kindness, gentleness, compassion and zest for life. I hope you always know you can turn to your mom with whatever you need.

To my one and only son, I love you to the ends of the earth and will be here whenever you need your momma.

I’m Amber

Welcome to Caring for Calves and Kids. I’m a 5th generation dairy farmer farming with my parents and husband while trying to raise 3 kids. Life is crazy, messy and so much fun! It’s hard to be a mom and sometimes even harder when you farm. So to ensure no one else feels alone I’m sharing my stories. Enjoy!
